MSF Group Riding Video

I just watched this video over at Keep The Rubber Side Down blog and thought how great it would be if all the riders in a group actually did this. Fortunately most of the riders I’ve rode with in a group ride are good riders and follow most of these group techniques, but sometimes there’s that one or two riders that are just clueless.

As many of us know these techniques already, I think its still a great reminder… the hand signals are sometimes very useful as well.

One of the most important parts of a group ride is the Ride leader. A good ride leader sometimes has to be a bit gruff before a ride and make sure everyone knows the basics. Don’t crowd the person in-front, wait for the rider behind you at turns, etc. It’s not an easy job. That’s probably why I tend to ride alone, that and I don’t have to stop for a bathroom break every hour and half : )

Art… you are so right! A good leader really makes the difference for a large group.

I was talking to BigDog after my Idaho trip and he said “if the leader stops for a minute and looks at the route or GPS.. just give him room, just leave him alone..” That really gives the leader confidence and time to make sure the group is on track.

I too, ride alone a lot.. but that’s fine with me too.

    Basher,

I followed you web site link from one of your videos on ADV and came across this post.

Thanks for posting the video. You’re correct, it’s a good reminder.

The big thing for me in group riding, even if it’s just a couple bikes is the staggered formation on the straight roads and switching to single file in the “fun” turns.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had bikes roll up directly behind me on the road in traffic. If they do not get the hint and keep following my track when I move to the other side of the lane, I’ll slow down and let them go by because I do not want to get hit from behind because they were not paying attention.

I know exactly what you mean! Riding with an experienced group can be real fun.. but when there’s the inexperienced or “hot rod” rider it just scares everyone…. no thanks.. back of the line we go..
