Winter Riding Gear – “Cha-ching!”

Winter Riding Gear – “Cha-ching!”

Winter weather has officially set in here in the Midwest. This means you either park the bike for the winter or get some good cold weather riding gear. For me, I don’t really have cold weather gear, just my Fieldsheer Adventure jacket, heated grips, good balaclava and some Patagonia Men’s Capilene 3 under pants and shirt.  During my search for quality gear at a good price, I found a few videos from RevZilla that review some great gear. But only if you have a lot of cash to throw down, that’s for sure.  Either way, very cool gear for my wishlist! I’m leaning towards picking up some heated gear before replacing my jacket & pants.

I really enjoy RevZilla‘s gear review videos, they really do a great job.

I have a Kilimanjaro jacket and liner from New Enough.com I like them but man are they heavy. I generally just leave the liner out and run my heated vest under it. Toasty warm even in sub 20* weather.

I also have a set of heated grips and really good Alpinstar winter gloves. I feel like the Michelin Man when get on and off the bike.

      hahaha.. Michelin Man!

My Fieldsheer Adventure with the thermal liner does pretty well, but adding a heated vest seems like it will do wonders, just to keep the chill down.

I’d get more windproof gear before I added heat otherwise you’ll just lose it as fast as you can make it. Trapping the heat in/blocking the wind is most important to winter riding.

The adv boots look really awesome. I tried them on a black friday sale. I found it hard to shift on an SV. They also made my legs hurt. I was really bummed. Sticking with my on-roads for now.

Ah.. thx Chris. We don’t have the snow like you do up north, so I’m sure you’ve figured this issue out!! Since you ride everyday to work no matter what the temps are.. haha!

Next time I go out I’m going to try this. Put my windproof liner from my Fieldsheer mesh jacket on, then my thermal liner, then my Fieldsheer Adventure jacket. Don’t have a heated vest yet.. this may do the trick here in the 30s.

      I’ll report back.

I also swapped my moto jacket liner for my mountain hardware winter coat liner. Works great.

If you have a non-mesh jacket a heated vest will work fine. I just put on a golf shirt or other windbreaker type jacket (thin is the key) over the vest. That holds the warmth in and keeps me toasty.
